Most people think they are contributing by making sure they recycle their bottles, jars, glass, plastic and paper.
Recycling, although very important, should really be considered the LAST THING we do.
We should really think of what we can do to
avoid and prevent creating this waste in the first place to lessen our impact on natural resources. Making small changes in our minds and actions can have a great beneficial effect on the environment. Plus regular maintenance of and repairing your appliances can save you money in the long term - now that can't be bad!
SUGGESTIONS
- Before throwing out an appliance think about repairing it first!
- Improve the effectiveness of appliances by looking after them and regularly replacing items like filters and belts on vacuum cleaners, tumble-dryers and dishwashers. Europart has a good range of consumable items.

- Use a lower wash temperature or economy wash and optimise the washing load in order to use energy and water efficiently. - Look for packaging that has been previously recycled, is recyclable or biodegradable.
- Batteries - using the main electrical supply is a far greener option as batteries can be extremely dangerous containing hazardous substances like mercury and cadmium. The most environmentally sound option is the rechargeable type as these can be used repeatedly without waste.
- Energy saving lamps lasts four times longer than an ordinary lamp/ bulb, saving energy and money!
- Products displaying the ECOLABEL have met strict environmental criteria in their production and are considered among the best in their class.
- If you must buy a new appliance, ask for advice on the most energy efficient models; look for the energy efficiency rating sticker to guide you in your purchase. "A" rating is the most efficient on washing machines, tumble dryers, washer-dryers dishwashers, lamps, electric ovens and airconditioners. Refrigeration appliances use "A+" or "A++" to denote the most efficient model. It is law in the EU that appliances show the energy efficiency rating - ask your retailer if the appliance does not show it.
